Chromakey Filming
Chroma key is a technique used in the TV and film industry for separating actors and presenters from a background, and then adding a different background using either a 3D studio image, still image or moving footage.
For example, the person presenting the weather on TV is not actually stood in front of a map. He or she is stood in front of a plain green or blue background. The map, clouds and rain symbols are then added electronically.
The final image we see (third on the right) is a composite image that has had the blue or green background removed and replaced by the picture of the maps and symbols. This
technique is called Chroma key.
Below you can see the technique in it's various stages. Image 1 shows the presenter in the studio where behind them hangs a green screen. Image 2 is
the background image that will replace the green screen. And Image 3 shows the two shots composited together using the Chroma key technique.
